I know the chat section that used to be on redline was removed..
But why not offer a link to open a window for a web based IRC channel?

The old chat really did stink though..

If you got 50+ people interested then it might be worth implementing, otherwise 95% of the day it would be idle, and that's a bit of a WOFTAM for bzchi to set up.

Still, no reason someone with the time and energy can't set it up and link to it from the forum. ;)

Just a grave dig... when we had the chat, it was great for a few months.. then died in a hole.

No one will be interested if its not there :P

Most people idle in IRC these days anyway. The good thing about it is that if someone DOES join the channel, mIRC can be set up to notify when people join..

I read the two links. To alleviate privacy concerns, you use an IRC server that encodes the IP of the users. Austnet.org does this. The only way you can get caught out is by initiating a DCC chat or file with someone. Then if you're that stupid... welcome to the internet!

I ran IRC channels for about 2 years before getting in to web forums, not something I really plan on going back to ;)

I can see the reason for the interest from a social side, but from a technical (and sharing information with others) side it has its shortfalls eg. not being able to easily access content others have shared, others not being able to contribute to conversations unless they are online at the time, realtime rather than when it suits the reader/poster and it also splinters where the information is provided from (here and there).

Collecting chat logs is one solution.. but then you will have huge amounts of inane text to weed through :|

You won't be seeing one from me sorry (getting too old!  )

If someone does want to set one up, and has the energy to run it please do, and post a link here so people who want to use chat have an option to connect with people on this site. I'd rather it was a generic Suzuki channel though and not using the RedlineGTi name. It shouldn't be difficult to setup a channel on Austnet (unless it's changed in the last 12 years  )
