I do not think you can chip the early Mk1 ECUs. I could be wrong but I am pretty certain.

I thought the ECU did not control the ignition in Mk 1's, therefore any control would be in fuel injection. Aftermarket ECU would be your choice to map on Dyno to be safe.

Quite right, Mk1 ECU only controls fuel. It has a vacuum advance unit on the distributor.
