Bought this car Jan 2012, i was looking for a GTi to use a little project. Came up on redline for sale made the phone call and I was on the train to Dubbo within 2 days of looking at the ad

For sale thread: http://redlinegti.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=48606

It had a respray still in good condition and a pretty simple turbo kit. Interior was in very good order (apart from some glittery black paint on centre console). Body was rust free pretty clean little car for its age and km’s.
1.png
The motor felt pretty strong, AVO cast manifold, GT2554r, FPV typhoon intercooler; some form of Nissan dump pipe, semi haggard exhaust system. Boost was controlled by a boost T and it was running on 8psi. Test drive went well.. And after a semi uneventful drive from Dubbo to Sydney the car was mine.
2.png
Initially an Adaptronic Basic Select (e420d) was purchased along with a patch loom, got a set of decent looking rims as the 14” haggard spec ones on it I absolutely despised; also got some 2nd hand suzitech braces, MSD 6A with MSD coil. Scored 2 x Cobra buckets for really cheap already on GTi rails. Sourced 600lb king springs and koni shocks in the rear. Organised some nice dark tint and she was looking a lot better then before.

I managed to get a fair bit of Tim’s (Ghostg13b) build, which included:
• Rebuilt turbo engine (vitara pistons, spool rods, ARP head bolts & rod bolts, Superfly Cams, Cam gears
• Cultus Gearbox with all the ancillaries
• Wilwood front calipers
• Fuel rail and RR FPR
• Walbro fuel pump
• Cultus intake with SR20 T/B

The Tune was done on the factory motor with T25, SR20tb, cultus intake, fuel rail FPR and pulled 116kw atw, on the MRC dyno in Sydney. I was yet to have Tim’s motor installed as I was moving from Sydney to Melbourne.

5.png
After I got to Melbourne the new motor went in, I purchased T28 off a mate to replace the old T25. I was then out and about on the search for decent tuners and shops around my area. Randomly walked into BC Automotive and marine in Lilydale. http://www.bcauto.com.au/

After a while talking to Brett he was happy to throw it on the Dyno and get it running properly.
I drove away with more power but more ideas. The car made 140.8kw atw, it became a hell of a lot more lively to drive.

Still running the Bunnings spec intake setup, with different sized piping everywhere I would sit infront of the car and see countless points of improvements that could be made. The air filter was piped awkwardly over the cultus box which created massive heat sink. All in all the whole intake side of things needed to be sorted before anything else. Removed the AVO manifold and turbo, both needed a good freshen up.

The long awaited Bewitched Carbon fog light inserts
21.png

I spose it gets to a point in any build where the question has to be asked, how much do you like this car. At this stage I had never considered how much I had already spent on the old girl. After going through receipts and crying myself to sleep I figured it’s already got more parts then the purchase price ten fold. I could enjoy it for what it is; a very streetable car that loves picking on some high dollar cars in the hills..or.. get serious and maybe have a crack at the top 10 big boys on the redline hall of fame. Knowing there was a lot more in the motor I got the ball rolling.

New intercooler, stainless piping and BOV saw the car increase power to 154kw

Oil cooler purchased from Gibbo
26two.png
Change of injectors from 480’s to 1000’s and re-tuning for E85 increased power to 182kw the GT28 I purchased from a mate started to struggle, holding boost at 20psi then suddenly dropping boost it meant that it was time to source another turbo.

Looking much neater with stainless piping
27.png
After saving a bit of dosh, a GTX28 was purchased. Spec’d up by Eastern Turbo Services it would take anything we could throw at it. The turbo was classed as a Hybrid, based on the GTX frame; internal specs are unknown. As ETS are tied in with many race teams and would not release the info to me; at least that’s what the email response was.

I have to say that this is an impressively zippy street car.

I would like to see what ti could do around Winton some day.

Back on the Dyno with the new turbo, power increase from 182kws to 205kw atw a very good increase. Apart from cams and adj cam gears the head was factory..so that power impressed me. As it cracked the 200kw mark I purchased it another gift..was a group decision in a facebook conversation, but the car is known for the plates now.

Hatch Attack was creeping closer at this stage and I was getting pretty excited, as it had been a long time since a national meet had been held. Got a set of Advan A050’s and was ready to rock.

It wasnt all smooth sailing, every build has its issues..

along with blowing a head gasket, the rear engine mount was snapped off the block completly.
a alternate mounting point was made as a quick fix before Hatch Attack, however this one has now bent as well

It was a completely different animal to drive, the power and torque increase not only from the E85 but the new turbo was mind blowing. Traction became a bigger issue, and torque steer was huge. After towing a few thousand km’s for hatch attack hosted by Zuboo at QR; A very excited me let it loose on the skid pad and the diff decided it was best to jump ship. Diff was pulled out and assessed…shagged #-o . Cusco gave a lead time of 90 days for a LSD replacement so the car was left under a blanket In hibernation. :(

37.png
38.png
39.png
A few months went by and December arrived; Cusco kept their word and the Diff arrived very soon after the predicted 90 day lead time. Whilst the car was inactive I had BC Automotive make up a set of front coilovers and rebuild the rear koni adjustables. What a difference the 1 way diff made, pretty much eliminated the sketchy torque steering under acceleration and pulled really well under cornering, combined with the coilovers and fresh rear end it was bliss to drive in the hills. Very smile worthy indeed.
That was really it, I had a 205kw E85 drinking street rego’d weapon, that came out on weekends when I was home from work…and I am happy as a pig in [email protected]

Thanks mate, yes its making suprisingly rapid progress
Dash was removed to fit the cage, i always wanted to have a "flocked" style dash..figured this would be the easier way.

Complete dash was taken to Cam's Custom Automotive Interiors:

Cam matched the suede from my wheel, and worked his magic, also covered my gear boot...because well...why not!
