Hey All,

Good to be back on RedlineGTi

Well on the project path once again.

Third GTi for me and third purchase site unseen.
Not sure if it's gutsy or losing my mind.. maybe GTi fever.

As you could imagine, if you roll the dice enough times you're going to get burned by a dishonest seller.
For me this was that time.

Fortunately for me, these days, I'm in a position in my life where I have the means and ability to recover the project and have a little perspective on the (relatively in this case, small) heatbreak of being ripped off. I don't need this car to get to work and they are still cheap cars after all.

The most glaring issue the car had, though there are many, was the front upper radiator support...

...which wasn't attached to the car..

Soomebody had drilled the spot welds from the old, accident damaged upper support and removed it. A replacement was on the car, but not welded on, with the front guards bolted over the top.

Note image 4 - the battery mount replaced by a strap, the strap is dual purpose, it's actually holding the upper radiator support on. [-X
Eek..

A friend of a friend brought the following GTi for the running gear. So i took the shell off his hands to repair the front end damage and salvage anything worth saving.

With the donor shell on its way, onto the next set of issues.

As the car arrived with half a radiator of rusty water, I thought that would be a good spot to start. So I jacked the car and instead decided to remove all the ill fitting bumpers, headlights, guards etc. (Feeling much better every tech screw and Bunnings nut and bolt removed.) Which incidentally was all of them.

After the wheels were off I spotted a cv shaft which had a split boot and somebody had blessed me with red painted calipers. Mind you painted with the rotors on and then melted into them with them with the first brake application.

So I ordered a cv boot and disassembled while I waited. While removing the driveshaft I found the water pump leaking. There's that leak. Water pump and timing belt kit ordered.

After ordering the wrong pump, returning it and ordering the right one. I was finally able to fit it up.

Correct part number in image 2 for my G13B

Removing the CV turned out to be a headache, as it was stuck tight in the hub.

I removed the control arm to get a decent swing at it with the sledge hammer after several days soaked in wd40 to no avail. So off to a friend's workshop, who worked their magic with a screw type leverage clamp and sledge hammer, made just for that job.

So during the process of slamming it with the sledge hammer I'd mushroom headed the cv thread. So I disassembled the driveshaft and replaced the cv joint with the boot.

The other cv also had a bad boot too so I replaced it. Only after reinstalling the shafts and pumping in new gearbox fluid did I notice that the passenger drive shaft seal was weeping oil. The signs were there, just didn't look I guess.

Add another item to the order list...

Originally I was planning on getting it onto the road, but the state that it arrived in means basically everything needs attention to get to that stage. I've done some sprints, hill climbs and circuit racing previously, so some low key club events will probably be the first use for the car. Chances are you will see me at Ringwood sooner or later.
