Hey folks,

I’m considering to fit a GTI engine into my classic mini. Most problems have been theoretically solved, but a big one is quite hard to get rid of.
I would like to keep my Innocenti Cooper speedometer, but don’t know what to do with the VSS unit. If I just unplug it, what would the engine management do?
May there be a way to fit the VSS to the speedo cable, or how does it exactly work and look? I’m new to all this fancy electric stuff. I’ve only learned to adjust carburettors and ignition with a timing gun, yet. :lol:

Someone in the miniforum used a megasquirt, but this would add another 250€ to my project. But as far as I’ve read this might the most practical way to get rid of the VSS?

GTi uses a mechanical cable to drive the Speedo I believe. No electricity

Yes, I know about the speedo cable, but isn‘t there a vss in the speedo Cluster?
It‘s a Mk2 engine, if that is important.

Vehicle speed sensor. I was told the ECU needs the driven speed to „know“ when to idle :?:

If you are using the ECU for the G13B engine (and why wouldnt you?) then you do not need the VSS. Idle is controlled by engine RPM, not road speed. Otherwise, if you are cruising and take it out of gear, it would continue at 3000rpm while doing 100kmph if you were in neutral.

Ok, this does make sense.
I had a chat with another guy who converted his Mini to swift GTI. He said he didn't use the VSS either. I doesn't made any difference, but the engine always gave the code no. 24.
But why did they add it, when it's not needed?
Quite confusing. :oops:

The VSS can be used for calculating the odometer if it is digital, along with logging etc. The VSS is usually part of the dash, not on the ECU, but I could be wrong.

There are many cases where people have put the G13B into a Mini, so there is plenty of reference material to work from.

“according to the manual , the only purpose of the vss in the gti is to control the idle solenoid valve , different vehicles use the vss in different ways , honestly id do your conversion and then decide later if you really need the vss.”

I have a link extreme in the swift....If i am moving AT ALL...the bloody rpm stays at 2000.....soon as I stop it drops to idle. I asked Chris and he said he has had so many emails to link about making that feature switchable...its because most cars don't idle high like my 1200 rpm idle....so it holds 2k....also many autos have the high idle until motionless.

I wonder if the gti has that feature in its ECU....I think if thats all it does it will throw you the code but simply just not control the idle solenoid valve....so you MIGHT get a stall as you roll to a stop if there is any load on the engine.

Id just remove it and see what happens.

My Mondeo does this now, but it is a vacuum leak (I think!)

ecu needs vss signal for proper idle when rolling, i remember 15 years ago having a broken speedo gear , and idle would fluctuate when neutral (or foot on the clutch) and over 20kmh

you could take out the vss in the cluster , dismantle the thing and put in a small box with the vss cable plugged in it and all this hidden under the dash with circuitery to suzuki ecm....

the car can run without...
