Hi Guys,

as anyone who has been reading my uild thread knows I'm 95% sure the seals on my Garret GT2860RS have let go, either through lack of use or over pressurising. Either way I would like to know people's thoughts on if it is a good idea to have it rebuilt or just buy another (quality) replacement?

A "basic" rebuild is about $850 or I can buy a replacement turbo for about $1250 (yes I can buy ebay spec turbo's cheaper but I'm not putting that crap on my car as the engine build cost for my car is over $5000!)

There is a chance I can swing the $850 after Christmas, with favourable gifts and a potential cleaning out of my mk1 spares so I thought I'd ask peoples thoughts on it as there hasn't been a thread on here about turbo rebuilds.

If you can get a replacement cartridge for cheap* then you just have to put your housings on it. Would be better than a bearing/seal kit.

*cheap meaning cheaper than a whole new turbo. 8-[

It is certainly an option, I just don't have the skills to play with turbos

It's actually quite easy to change the core out. I've played around with an old td04 that has screwed seals and there's not much to it.
