As the above title suggests I am doing an engine conversion into my MK1 gti. The engine is a Toyota 4EFTE which is a 1.3 dohc fuel injected turbo. This engine is from a Toyota Starlet gt. I am writing this for anyone who may decide to do a similar conversion or just have a sticky beak to show how hard/easy its going to be, costs and whats involved.
So far i have spent $1050 being for
Complete running engine $600
Gearbox with cv splines $125
Complete loom with ECU $100
Clutch pedal assembly-master $ 25
TDO4L for upgrade later $200
Still some more things I still have to get are- Gearshift with cables about $60, Slave cylinder and lines about $50, Front mount intercooler about $300 and some more odds and ends.
Did the first trial fit this morning and was pretty happy that my measuring was spot on
Although the top mount has to go (no great loss) as will the power steering pump as these two have clearance issues.
The front engine mount is virtually perfect, if anything a tiny bit of modifacation elongating the holes for a perfect fit. The two mounts on the gearbox need to be fabricated and they will be mounted to the gearbox crossmember. Thats enough for today gotta go work arvo shift but the plans for the next few days include-taking out engine, removing gti loom, installing 4efte loom and installing the hydraulic clutch setup.

Looks good mate.
Are you going to get a front mount Intercool?
What else can you do to keep the power steering seems a shame to loose that?
Any performance mods to make along the way whilst you are doing the engine swap.
- Exhuast
- Airfilter
- Intercooler
- etc
Any cosmetic mods.
- Hide wiring?
- Detail engine ?

Ye definately needs a front mount not just for the performance but the top mount sits about 50mm too high. I probably could keep the power steer with a bit of sheet metal modifacation behind headlight but we'll see. I want to do some basic mods to the engine once everything is mounted up. I have the tdo4l which will be mounted on a custom manifold and dump(the car already has 2.25inch exhaust) and a safc to fuel it up a bit. Should be good for around 160-170 hp at the front wheels As for AU starlet where do you think i bought all the parts from

While the motor is out is a good time to clean the engine bay and detail some parts.

Dont forget to change the timing belt while the engines out. If 170hp is your goal then youll also need a new clutch which will be 10x easier to put in while the engine out too.
Good work so far

Hi guys. Little update. Picked up some more stuff for the conversion today. Got an Exedy clutch kit(picked it up from a guy on AU Starlet. Its only been in car for about a month. Price $40 BARGAIN! )Shifter and cables from the wreckers $50, new timing belt $49 and organised courier to pick up original front GTI bar and fog lights from GTI4DR. This bar was on my other mk1 which i sold to Snapper, who sold it to gti4dr, who sold the bar back to me. Its done about 2000 kms on the back of a truck! Anyway got a 4 day weekend so should be getting plenty done and will post up some pics of the progress soon.
Rob.

There's a few places around that make custom manifolds. Castle Hill Performance and Exhaust do aftermarket ones. Depending which turbo she runs, you can get a stainless manifold to suit the standard ct9 turbo from ebay, Zena racing or autobahn88 somrthing like that. There about 260 delivered. They also do the custom dump pipe in stainless for about 110 delivered. I believe these parts are a straight replacement for standard parts( fit in the same positions). Hope that helps.
