Gid'ay fellow members,

I have purchased a complete suspension & brake set-up (less the master cycl) out
of a (6/97) GTI swift & I wish to do a "brake up-grade" on a MH Barina (5 door).

I was wondering if there was anybody on this site that maybe able to tell me any
tricks or traps to look out for?
Just want to make sure that I have everything & not get stuck half way through
the conversion. I have searched on this site, but I cannot find out anywhere if the
splines are different on the drive shafts.
I have the GTI shafts, but I am worried that the GTI shafts will not be compatible with
the G13a Barina diff, & the Barina shafts will not be compatible with the GTI hubs?

If anybody out there has done this type of conversion before & could spare a little
time & offer a little guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Guy :D

Its all bolt on but you will need to use the GTi driveshafts. gearbox end is the same between Cino and GTi but hub knuckles are bigger on GTi.
You will also need GTi handbrake cables. only connect one mid cable attachment tab to the car if your Barina is a 4 door.
you will need the GTi rear knuckle and hub as well as the drum brake axle is very different.
Master cylinders are the same and I've never bothered with the proportioning valve

Thanks for your help GTP, the car in question is a 5 door Barina . . .
So, I guess now I should be in the hunt for a "mid cable" GTI handbrake mechanism, &
a GTi rear knuckle assembly. Is that right?

Thanks again.
Guy :D

P.S.: I have tried to attach a photo of the car so you could see it (it's nothing special), but
the only photos I have are too large & I don't know how to compress them.
Cheers. :D

You can make photos smaller easily by using Microsoft Paint. Open the photo in paint, there is a "Resize" button on the top row. Leave it set to "Percentage" and set it to 50% in both the horizontal and vertical boxes. Click "Save as" and save as a different file name e.g. Barina resized (as the new resized one will have some quality loss and you can keep the original just in case). Then upload new smaller photo to site and cancel changes when exiting Paint.

You are welcome :D
Michael

you want GTi handbrake cables...nothing mid about them. when installing them in a moredoor you only can bolt one of the two clamps that are mounted in the MIDdle of the cable to the chassis.

The point is that the wheel base of the 5 door and sedan are 100mm longer than the GTi, so the handbrake cable is a bit short to fit properly. Another solution is to make up the difference with an extension at the lever end.

the other handy point to note (i found out the hard way) is that once you have GTi brakes all round the standard Barina 13" stockie will not clear the brakes front or rear

I thought i was sweet running 13s, i got lucky being my hayashis are low enough offset to clear the brakes. the stockie totally fouls on the front caliper and hits the rear on the inner casting of the wheel
