My 1990 GTi is hunting when cold, but settles into a proper idle once warm.
A mechanic friend told me that the cold start air valve is part of the problem.
He told me to remove it and clean it out as it may be partly blocked.
I have removed the end cap but cannot work out how to remove the internals.
Or do I replace the whole unit with a new one? Any help is appreciated.

Rod.

I'm not aware that it can be serviced. With the end cap removed you should be able to see whether the valve is open or closed. If the coolant temp is below 60deg then it should be open. If the temp is above 70 deg then it should be closed. If you're removing it then you can immerse it in hot water and check that it does it's thing.

It might also be worth checking the water temp sensor and isc valve.
