This is not an easy subject to approach so please read the entire post and post up comments good or bad so we can really gauge reaction to figure out where to go from here.

I am currently looking at purchasing a large amount of hosting in advance, approximately 2 years. The reason I am planning to do this is that the cost of the hosting can be negotiated when I am working with a large amount, and the Aus dollar is pretty strong at the moment against the US (which is where I pay for hosting). Currently I believe I can get hosting to meet the site's current (and growing) requirements for the next 2 years for roughly $30AUD a month.

Basically I am thinking about a forum drive to raise funds to purchase hosting well into the future for the site. This money won't be for paying moderators. Moderator time, effort and energy will still be donated by the dedicated members as it currently is.

None of us are looking to make money from this venture, and all donations to the site will be injected directly into the hosting of the site, nothing else.

What there will be:
We are planning to show our appreciation by a tag line below the forum, with something along the lines of "this months hosting costs donated by <username>". A subtle note so other members can see who has contributed.

What there won't be:
A 'Members' group of users, or 'donating user' title system.
A separate section for users who have donated
Any bias treatment for people who donate
Any kind of 'club' member card or membership
Ads, I refuse to have ads on the site so subsidise the sites existence. From the start the site has been for enthusiasts, not a money making exercise.

Donations are for hosting, nothing more.

Will the site vanish without donations? Nope. I can honestly say, unlike many other sites, I am not going to beat the drum of destitution in an attempt to rally up support and demand cold hard cash to prevent the demise of the site. I will continue to pay for hosting as I have for the past 5 years even if this 'fundraiser' doesn't go ahead. The donation is really a way of giving back (if you believe the site deserves it). The site isn't broke, and it isn't going anywhere either ;)

All opinions, comments etc. appreciated.

Donations:
I have made PayPal payment available for those who use the service and want to donate, I will cover the payment fees. Donate whatever you are happy to, please don't feel that $30 is a maximum or minimum. After donating drop me a PM on here with your email address so you can receive some recognition for your generosity! I will work out a way to thank those who donate on the site :).

sounds like a good idea, for many redlinegti.com users this site keeps them going and with the amount of users we have, it cant b e that hard to find $30 just once. also another idea i thought of is...

we could possibly charge extra for the redlinegti.com stickers and use the profites to fund the hosting of the site (not t o sure what the sales of the stickers are like though)

cheers, Leon

Well I can tell you I am having enough problems selling the stickers at a loss, let alone a profit (have never tried to make money on them). I am open about people using the design, and EPS file and as a result, there always seem to be cheaper options out there for people. I welcome this though as in the end it is all promotion for the site.

As for the donation amount, a user wouldn't need to donate $30 for recognition, I am sure we could work something out.. slicing months up or something.. :P

I think we should have a redline SHOP section... the profit from there should go straight into the forum (hosting).

Great idea!

I think its a great idea.

Besides the great spirit of mateship on the forums and site in general, from a purely economic perspective, the money you save buying and selling parts, and the invaluable advice provided by fellow redliners has saved the majority of users a pretty penny.

Not a big ask to give back to what has given you so much.

to be honest...i am happy to donate mate. Let me know how much is needed and ill do it now! Like kappa said it isnt about the money. This site has given us so much and im sure giving some back wouldnt harm us. By doing that we gain heaps more :)

I have learned so much here by so many people. It has saved me heaps of money. If i was to see a mechanic for every issue i had then it would cost me heaps more.

Can we honesly say that we will all buy from the shop? ok so there might be T-Shirts, Mugs, hats etc.. but how much can one person buy? As for parts.. theres already enough places doing that. Plus that also costs money... Like the T-shirts.. everyone wanted one till it was time to cough up the cash...

I for one will contribute to the donation side of things, this site is awesome, i love it as it is.. It's saved me alot of money..

T-Shirts, as has been mentioned in another thread ended up costing money (I know I was out of pocket $200+, haven't asked Brayden if he got out of it OK). Not only that, a T-shirt represents a massive amount more of our time, we need to purchase the blank shirts, organise designs, screening, sizes, postage, payment collection not to mention the initial monetary outlay (which I may as well just spend on 2 years hosting).. the list goes on.

I think there will be another T-Shirt run in future, but as for a money making exercise, I don't think it is very useful.

No probs Sam pm me your bank details it is a very worthwhile cause I think everyone that has used this site to sell items should atleast think about donating it is in the interests of us all and you never know it might bring on the shirts earlier.

cheers Mic

I'm all for the donation side of it as well. Even if you were to suggest, Sam that people pay $5 each per month for the privelage of being able to access this site, I'd definately be in for that. You'd probably only have to do it for 6 months or 12 months and that could hopefully extend funds right into the future.
You know that Neo and I used to contribute to another forum and quite happily so - but this forum is much more worth the funds.

Just my 5c worth lol
:D

Although I personally would be happy to send a donation towards the hosting of the site, maybe a more practical method of securing funds long term would be to set up a advertising fee structure, say $5 per ad, paid via paypal to a a redline hosting fund account, I dont know how difficult that would be to set up but if your looking for donations anyway I guess your going to have to set up something similar anyway.
When you decide how people can donate to get the ball rolling short term then let us know.

I also think that if you get more money then needed, a good idea would be to design some redlinegti.com merchandise. e.g. lanyards, slip on seat covers, hats, t-shirts, crew shirts, etc. Maybe even like a quaterly subscriber newsletter. Just throwing a few suggestions out there. Obviously the ongoing sales from the merchandise would help with that, but there is also an initial cost to set that stuff up. Maybe even set up a little online shop or something.

BTW.... I would be more then happy to donate. Just let me know.

I'd be happy to kick in some cash when I have it  wouldn't be regular but I could easily (and happily) swing $30 every few months. I think a voluntary donation system is a great idea.

This site has helped me heaps so I'm happy to help keep it up and running. I don't see why others couldn't help too - seems like a few would be interested too.

Good work to all involved with this site - you guys rock! :D

advertising is a nono - it may be good and the site definately has the traffic to suit but genrally not a good idea - this is the only site i know which is ad free and i am definately up for donating

put it this way ... we have 5570 users as at this minuite. lets assume 90 percent dont want to donate/dont look here anymore if only 500 users donate 3 dollars of their cash we will raise enough to do 3.5 years of hosting!

plus there will be others who want to donate more

post/pm your bank details and we'll shoot u some cash
