Found this little gem while repairing a 2000 model jimny at work yesterday
I knew some baleno G16B motors had steel main caps, and APV G16AID has steel main caps (all models I've seen)
But this is the first time I've ever heard of it in a G13 main

I rebuilt a 2000 13BB in a Chevy Metro last summer and it had steel ones also.

Yes Ive seen a G13bb with the steel main caps before but when i went looking through about ten g13bb engines (all from jimnys) in a wreckers they all had the std alloy caps, so it would be good to know why and when they came out with this .After searching through all the jimny engines I had thought it was g13bb engines fitted to carry 4wd vans and utes but have no proof of that either just that the owner of the engine i saw had removed one from his 4wd carry

Found some old threads on Teamswift mentioning others that have found similar, seems to be a 2000-2003 thing.
I'm only speculating of course, but I'd think it's a design iteration, doing the last G series with steel mains for production testing (liana models first came to market with the m-series at about that time) in the m and K motors, the mains are four bolt steel, so maybe testing two bolt steel caps in ally blocks was their reason.
2000 model carry might have steel mains, I've torn down 3 engines from carry vans, all 97/98 models, they all had ally mains.
I've seen a baleno and a vitara G16B with steel main caps, vitara was a 1998 and baleno was a 99.
