I received disappointing news today, I took my favourite red Mk1 down the the mechanics two days ago with a load noise in the front end, thinking maybe a bush or something

Today he delivered me the bad news, the front chassis on the drivers side has completely collapsed and to repair will cost around $3,500 - as the engine needs to come out then full rebuild of the front corner etc, then engine back in.

After owning this awesome car for over 12 years, it seems that I will have to say goodbye.

Unless there is some keen person out there that wants to but it to rebuild a front end to keep it going, I think the best thing to do is strip the car and sell of all the good parts, the engine and gearbox are very sought after by racers.

Such a shame

That is a very sad day :( it's such a shame to see these cars rusting away before their mechanicals give out :(

Glad to see Zedds old black car is still looking great and going well though :)

photos?
with access to old 4 door barinas etc the corner should be replaceable for a lot less than that. if you can weld of course.
Of course I haven't seen the damage yet?

This is very sad news and I can understand how you're feeling. :(
It comes as a surprise to me as I had thought that this car wasn't one of those which have been thus afflicted. I guess that you have the consolation of having your black car to keep you as "one of the faithful" to the Mk1 fraternity.
The economics of the situation really dictate that this is your best course of action.
I guess that you can be glad that you have had quite a few years of enjoyable and relatively trouble free motoring from this car. You were kind enough to allow me to drive it on one of the early Brisbane cruises and it still makes me smile to recall how fantastic this experience was.
The thought that all of the "good bits" will be used to breathe new life into other SA's (please - no Sierras or Minis  ) similar to the "people" organ donor program is perhaps some consolation to you.

I hope that the Mk1 people grab the opportunity to pick up some really good bits which appear to be offered at very realistic pricing. Best of luck with your garage clearance

If I could weld, I would be able to fix it yes, but alas I cannot weld.

Yes it truly is, but I am trying to build my own company, currently spending many hours in R&D, on top of me still having my normal job, so not much free time as I would like.

Learning all about wireless networking, coding H.323, working out designs for clinical simulation platforms, doesn't leave the time I would like to learn things like welding.

Well with the cracked chassis etc - probably the best I can get is around $500 for a unroadworthy Mk1 GTi.

Sorry to say i is now worth more to part it out, The front panels will now be donated to the black car to replace the damaged or ones that were there when i got the car from the previous interim owner. I will also transfer other parts to make the blak car one really good Mk1.

The engine gearbox and most likely Group A stuff will be sold, and the other goodies (suspension etc) will go up for sale along with many other boxes of parts of new and old I have accumulated over the years.

As to the Simmons, not selling them as they will have a new home back on a Brame! :D

Well done for buying Brame 11.

These group A parts you mention. What's on offer.
And what's the head lining like?

Unfortunately these cars aren't worth much whole if they are terminal :( but you can make others live on with the spares (that is my consolation).

Can't wait to see your improvements to the Brame too! We all know it's going to a good home which is great to see! =D>

I was gonna buy the brame
He offered it to me for $2300
But when I saw more detailed photos I decided not to
It's looks like someone just left it out in the sun

You gonna restore it

here are some ongoings, and introducing the new Rudolph .. (the hybrid from my 2 Mk1's)

I have been lucky, but needed lots of work, as i have found quite a bit of damage to the front suspension and drive trains of Rudolph and so I have had to change all from red car as a donor across. When removing the old ones from the black car, the intermediate drive was severely damaged. Also had damage as I had someone try to remove the Simmons whilst parked at work - leavning one wheel with all the nuts loose, lucky stopped before wheel coming off, but it broke one of the lugs so had to replace the full hub.

Now the car drives so much better, still lots of work to make the one car the best of both. Sone removing engine and will be making one good engine from three I have - still indecisive about going to Group A, but still in the back of my mind.

it is being pulled apart bit by bit and making the black car parts better. So when finished only the shell will be left - and with the damage to the chassis, dont know if it will be worth it.

The black car is slowly turning red

Once all parts are sorted, will be repainted to black all over.

An update

I have finally gotten most of my health back, damn septicaemia.

With my son, have pulled engine out ( this is I'll have the better cams put in an then motor donated to my black car)

Most of the rest is being stripped and once most done, body to go to wreckers.

well more is stripped, only have the underneath and suspension to go. We found quite a bit of 'cancer' bog and cracks throughout the body and chassis.

The decision to scrap is a better option as I am glad we have not continued to have this on the road as this would have been a death trap in an accident - we found a 20cm large crack going up the firewall as well as other structural issues.

Sad to see her pulled apart but that cancer is terminal unless you are super committed to keeping these things alive.

Hopefully the spares will serve the black beast well and keep a few others on the road
