G'day all, figured I'd better introduce myself. My name is Bill and I bought a MK3 GTi earlier this week.

My plan is to use the car as a daily driver while I rebuild the engine in my Toyota MR2 SW20 and to do a few local car club events in the meantime.

I was a mechanic by trade up until a few years ago, but I have no inside knowledge of these cars.
There's a few issues with the Swift I want to get sorted before I start on the MR2. Most of them aren't even worth mentioning and I'll fix without too much drama.

One of the main problems is it feels low on power, it doesn't misfire or anything obvious and it happily revs to and above 7k rpm, but I was just expecting a little more punch.

It's also seems like it's running rather rich. It has a pod filter at the air flow meter which I think is doing a great job at sucking hot air, so that is getting replaced with an OEM airbox.

It's also got a full exhaust incl. extractors which is probably the most droney exhaust I've ever experienced. So the rear muffler atleast will need replacing.

I might post an acceleration video in the next few days to see what you guys think.

I may just be expecting too much from the little 1.3

Either way, I'm pretty happy with the car, and I may very well hold onto it for a few years.

Onto pics.

Nice looking car mate.

Plenty of good advice on this site and always people around who can help.

Perhaps start with cleaning airflow meter. pods tend to chuck a lot of oil on them and people way over oil pods.

Nice looking car.

Pod filters despite all the marketing are usually more restrictive than standard paper filters. I would get a new one or go back to std. That could be a reason for rich. There is no black magic with these cars. Only a few usual basic things that upset them,

Air flow meter
Tps
Cold start valve

That's about it.

There not much punch they are like a rubber band.

To get the best out of these cars - Drive it like you stole it. Rev the ring out of it.
Take it to the redline if you want to get the best. Keep it up in the rev range.

You won't kill it.

I used to take mine to 8500rpm in every gear. (I put a chip in to eliminate the rev limit).
It's never missed a beat. Great engines.

Here's the acceleration video.

http://youtu.be/CSUuRMVW9QI

It's only 2nd gear as I didn't want to exceed the speed limit, especially since it was raining.
I was really only on it from 3k rpm onwards.
