Okay well as you "build Thread" watchers will have noticed my Turbo mk3 ("Monster") has stalled of late. Need the $ to get just the right gearbox setup to cope with the power and working some stupid hours thanks to tax time I haven't been able to get anything done other than passon on my old gearbox setup to another redliner

So getting back on topic, I found I needed (well need is a relative term :P ) a daily as I was working later and can't get my usual bus home I've been taxiing home. As luck would have it at the same time a mate who bought a GTi a while back needed to part with a car to cut his number of his rego's down (from 8!) and his GTi was the one to get the chop. Having sold him plenty of parts to get the car running and some more fun parts I knew a bit about it so I got the all clear from the Mrs and bought it for a cheap figure, and this is it...

Wearing the Veilside kit and blue tint from the "donor car" for my turbo build, 2.5" Exhaust from my own NA setup and the bonnet and spoiler from the blue/black GTi I wrecked a while back she's an interesting sight - thus the name "ugly duckling".

What do I have planned? First I'll remove the kit back to the stock setup, I have already organised to trade it (along with some stock parts) for a Mk1 GroupA reverse intake, adjustable cam gears, mk1 fuel rail adapted for an AFPR and a Chipped Mk3 ECU. The ECU will go in the car the rest I will sell to help fund the turbo box setup.

Once the body has been tidie I will smarten the interior by swapping back to black all the red parts you can see, adding seat covers as the driver's seat is ripped, aftermarket wheel and gear knob, fit my spare short shifter from my turbo build. and a general going over of the body to tidy it up. Once that's done it'll be a daily for a bit then when I feel the moment is good in the GTI market here I will on sell it to a new home to (hopefully) fund my gearbox setup for the turbo car.

The car is already lowered, with prelude front calipers and a pod but otherwise stock, she's done just over 303,000k's but is going strong other than the TPS failing last night on the way to a mates! #-o

So hopefully this "igly duckling" will end up a tidy car that will appeal to someone after a fun daily/track car and in the mean time provide me with a fun daily :)

AS I get time to work on the car I'll update this post too :)

Yeah it would be nice! Mostly its a $ thing as I don't have heaps to throw at a build so I start the build get it too a point then need to pause it, (Turbo Mk3 - lost two jobs in 3 months due to circumstances out of my control!) or sell it (Mk1 - can't put 3 kids seats in one!) the other cars are simply chance buys they I know I can use in some way.

This one is a way to have a daily and hopefully make a few $ towards what I need to get the Turbo car a gearbox setup. As I don't have a spare $2500 its what I need to do.

Plus I'm keen to save a GTi from scrapping for a change :D

My god your name for this is so accurate.
That's what I love about a GTi can build it proper or pick one up on the cheap that's a bit rough, spend small amounts tidying it up and have a cheap as hell clean daily

Cheers! I thought it was appropriate :P

As I sold the previous owner the kit I also have the original front and rear bars along with the bonnet. I'll be keeping the black/blue bonnet on this with the hope of attracting a buyer interested in a cheap daily/track car when I sell it.

It looked pretty good in its stock kit with the wheels and lowered so I'll take it back to that. Plus I'm keen for the swap for the parts noted above! :D

I just need a little bit of time and shed space to get this started! Hopefully this will be a few months of tinkering and daily use then moved on to someone else :)

Cheers :)

Hopefully all will go to plan and it'll all roll nicely into my having the turbo car ("Monster") done and putting another good GTi back onto the roads here in Tassie :)

'Ugly' is subjective, but I'm sure it'll become something you love with time.
'Colourful' would possibly work as well.
Look forward to seeing it evolve.

Yeah Its growing on me, especially the kit. But hopefully it will go this week and I'll return it back to stock. :)

I'm also going to run the old girl out at the drags this weekend (provided it stops raining!) for some fun. I'm hoping to get a chipped ECU into it to help me out a little. Its only 1/8th mile at the minute so every HP helps :P

Hopefully over the next few weeks I'll start the tidy up :)

Tonight the kit will come off and go to a new home and the stock kit will go back on. Also I will (hopefully) fit up a Gtaye chipped ECU to give me some extra hp when I hit the drag strip on Saturday. I also have dug through my spare parts and found all the required trim pieces to go back to grey rather than red :)

Thanks

Well after a big day at the drags I can now say I have a 10 second street car  not a joke, I have slips and video proof! I just need to get a youtube account and get the vid's uploaded.

Had a LOT of people loving the car and amazed it wasn't turbo'd and managed to finish in the top 6 in street class so I can't complain about that as it's been over 5 years since my last outing! Now to finish the Duck's tidy up! Then she'll be for sale 8)

Pinched the fronts off of "The Monster" to help with traction and make it "dragway spec"

Thanks mate! I quite like the look and would love to fit the white rims all around but I'm keeping them for the turbo car so once I get some rubber on the black rims they will go back on. Just need to sort the passenger rear corner body work, the interior (remove red pieces fit steering wheel and gear knob) and a stuffed CV and she'll go on the market :)

Here's a link to the race I was knocked out in... If you look up Tassie_mk1 you will also find a couple of videos I've put up and there will be more to come later as I get the chance to upload them. 8)

Okay so I made some progress last night of turning this Ugly Duckling into a fine Swan again :P

One new Sparco steering wheel with Suzuki horn button, a strategically placed Suzuki Sport sticker, leather geat boot, replace most of the red interior trim and tidy up the rear bar and she's starting to look mighty fine

amazing what one self tapper can achieve :)

Now the list of jobs is down to this

 remove remaining red trim pieces (leaving the ashtray most likely for a "Highlight")
 fit replacement tyres to black rims
 replace driver's side CV
 buy seat covers and fit

Nearly there :)

The CV is now fixed, some nice "Swift" Seat covers in the mail, and the final red parts removed. Now to get some rubber sorted and reset the tps as its just a little out :)
