I've got the same Aerocatch's, well worth the money.

I wouldn't be putting that blockguard anywhere near your motor though :?

I know of 3 builds using them and coincidentally have cracked blocks. That's enough for me. Depending on how much boost he is expecting to run, it is probably a wasted exercise anyway.

Hey Giannis,

Good work - you are going hard with that car!!! :P =D> =D>

I definitely agree with others about leaving the blockguard off though!!

I don't want to subvert your build thread - so I ask others to refrain from a dozen comments further bagging out blockguards or various engine builders.
But I am one of the people who have wasted a lot of money & destroyed a good engine through having a blockguard fitted! viewtopic.php?f=32&t=39292&start=140 Don't do it!!

There are a number of instances on this forum where immediately after the installation of a blockguard there has been very similar cracking to mine across the engine block of a Suzuki.

Here are some other examples;
Brad’s Cultus viewtopic.php?f=7&t=36355&hilit=pressure&start=40

DMWDave viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14398&p=133656&hilit=crack#p133656

& on a sister forum, TurboHull in Canada posted this comment “we have 3 guys here with GTis that installed a block guard, and 2 of them ended up with a cracked block. One of them had this happen twice. it cracks in the back and it leaks coolant.” and photos with identical cracking at http://www.teamswift.net/viewtopic.php? ... w=previous

WTF??!! Why does this happen? Dave Homer’s explanation is that “..by adding the rigidity of a blockguard it adds pressure. Where the head bolts on, the engine wall is thick, but lower, where the engine studs go in, the wall is only about 3mm thick. If the top is expanded, the pressure travels down to the weakest point. The Blockguard tries to push on the outside edge of the block.”

Some other engine builders say that blockguards are ok, but they again underline that it must be perfectly fitting, and have grouting to anchor the bottom of the cylinders too. Here is a comment from Todd (RUNUTS) of Forced Performance - he is an engine builder in Qld who has built 300+hp engines and is well respected as someone who knows his stuff. “Nothing wrong with block guards, just thought I'd clear that up first. Yours appears to be one of the suzukird guards. The problem with them, if you look at how it fits, is that it isnt made to [specifically] suit your block. Some areas put the cylinders in tension. If it doesnt fit correctly, there are gaps in some areas, its tight in others. This tension, is compounded greatly once you get the water temp and combustion pressures up, and hence crack, bye bye block.
The only way, to successfully blockguard these blocks, is to half grout the bottom of the block, and have a guard made specifically to fit your block. Further more, it must be done, with the head studs in place and tensioned to take into consideration correct block distortion rates. Its a time consuming and expensive task.”

Also, if you engine has had a hard life and you are going to do a rebuild, it is a wise move to dispose of the block which may be fatigued, and for a very small amount of money buy a GA block which has had a much gentler life! This is cheap 'insurance'!!

Anyway - hope that helps you, and keep us posted on how it goes!!

Cheers,
James
PS - you can buy copies of genuine GTi flares from Strider, if you want to cover your wheels sticking out beyond the guards. That is illegal here.

Grout the block as mentioned above, search for grouting or grout on here.

End hijack though, really keen to see this car transform.. nice progress :)
