Just read this over at carpoint
http://www.carpoint.com.au/news/2009/sm ... ight-15921

The points at the end suggest a new engine for the SX4 in 2010
End of July 2009: Swift RE4 sports limited edition; Swift with "safety pack".
Early 2010: Updated looks and engine for SX4 softroader hatch.
Mid 2010: Suzuki Kizashi, a four-cylinder mid-sized "Camry fighter".
Mid 2011: Suzuki Swift, all-new model.
Mid 2012: Suzuki Grand Vitara gets a bigger brother.

I am wondering if they are going to switch to the M series to match the European market? unless they are planning to provide a diesel variant? :-k

Notice that the M16A available for the SX4 is down on power from the Sport.

Here is the engine spec list from global Suzuki

I thought the only engine available on the aus spec models was the J20? We've got the base spec 4x4 version and that's what is has. V6 upgrade would be nice :D

I would expect the SX4 will get the J24B from the latest Vitara model. (They've dropped the 2L and added the 3.2L V6 from the XL7.)

It is the only engine available domestically, but the announcement above about a new engine makes me wonder if we are getting something from Europe (where the spec sheet is from). J24B would also make sense if that is what they are going to use in the Kizashi ;)

That's ridiculously down on power. The 2.0L engine barely pulls the SX4 along. A 1.5L engine with two-thirds the power would be painfully slow off the mark.

74kW for 1.2 tonnes? That's gotta be kidding!

The new Swift is porky at over 1 ton with 74kw, no reason Suzuki wouldn't do the same for other models.

I would be really nice to see if any one comes up with quality performance parts for the new SX4's. When I am finally done tuning mine I might sell it back to Suzuki and go for the Kashsi and make all the mods that way. If I am not mistaken the Kashsi is a bored out J20A to make it a 2.4L...

There is plenty of development happening on the SX4, particularly in the states.

The J24B in the Kizashi is a bored out J20A essentially from what I have found:

J20A
Bore: 84.0mm
Stroke: 90.00mm
CR: 9.5

J24B
Bore: 92mm
Stroke: 90mm
CR: 10.0

Looks pretty impressive

It's already used in the Grand Vitaras.

I like it because it's got potential like the K24A Accord Euro motor -> EG Civic conversion.

J24B -> Swift GTi (already proven that the J20A fits)

I agree with you that the M16A in the SX4 would be laggy but I think you might be confusing the M16A with the M15A. This isn't the 1.5L that is in the standard Swift, it's the 1.6 that's in the Sport but it's tuned very differently by the look of things. the M16 with VVT is quoted at 75-79kW while the one in the current Sport is quoted at 92kW. Notice however that the power is found at lower revs (5600 rather than, I think it's 6800 peak power in the Sport?) DMW Dave has seen a Sport dynoed and noted that the power curve is like flat until almost redline and then spikes. I'd say for the heavier SX4 they're going for more torque and even power, especially in the 4WD which it says has a bit more torque.
Now again, not denying that this might be slow - just pointing out some differences.

Also, it's all relative. I mean, I've been roasted on here for saying the new Swift (1.5) is actually quite quick - but seriously, roast me all you like but then go and drive some PROPERLY slow cars. This idiot I used to work with who reckoned he knew everything about cars but would reveal EVERY DAY another completely wrong idea that he had, said, and I quote: "I test drove an SX4 yesterday - not a bad car... ugly as anything, but they're OK, and they go like a bat out of hell." This wasn't a new one either, from memory it had about 40,000km on it.

Anyway sorry - back on topic. It'd be good if the SX4 got the J24B here, here's to hoping.

I dunno man, the Kizashi may have more capacity but it'll be heavier too. It basically looks like a Camry, we're probably talking 1400-1600kg. Wouldn't be surprised if the SX4 was quicker.

Plus isn't the Kizashi only going to be available in 2WD?

Sorry I only just saw this bit. So is there seriously talk of a 2.4L in a GTi?

That's INTENSE!

Well I guess so.

The J20A has been proven in a Swift

The J24B block should be no bigger (just bore difference) so there shouldn't be any problem fitting it if someone were to attempt it.

Let's hope that the Kizashi is a popular car so lots of wrecks with J24's start turning up ;)
