Well after checking out the 100th Anniversary edition Swift today I realised how lots of subtle changes have (to me) gone unnoticed over the different years, to make a lot of difference in what is for sale.

I am really keen for New Swift people to put together a list of the changes between the different revisions (people calling them phases?). Happy to plead ignorance on this.

If we can get a basic list together I will move it into the first post and update it over time. Things like the MP3 head deck, grill differences, light differences, steering wheel controls changing side on the steering wheel. I think this information will be invaluable in the future for people buying New Swift's to determine exactly where their car fits in, and what parts can be switched across revisions.

So if someone is keen to put a basic list together we can all work off (I would if I knew a bit more), we can then start collecting photos etc. of the differences and get a definitive list together.

Just remembered another thing that has changed, but can't remember where in the evolution ladder it falls. The rear seat folding mechanism and boot floor has changed from the original design. It no longer folds into a flat floor I believe?

I have a series 1, my neighbour has a series 2, and an ex workmate has a series 3 (but I'm no longer in contact). Anyhoo, the series 1 and 2 have the double fold rear seat, the series 3 has the single fold with the shelf. Note that series 1 has a very stiff square button to release the rear seat fold lock, whereas the series 2 has a different, much easier to press release button.

It's a series 3. Like I said, the series 3 is a single fold (all Swifts have a 60/40 split backrest) with a plastic shelf in the boot. If yours were a series 2, your backrests would fold down onto the rear squab, and then the whole seat wold fold again (double fold) up against the back of the front seats.

ooh. cool. i didnt know that about the whole seat folding. (excuse my ingorance)
i think i would prefer the whole seat to be folded down as aposed to just the back rests.

but i suppose who cares, i dont usually need to fold em down

thanks for the explanation. :D

Differences as I understand them (I could be wrong tho) :-

The very first new Swifts had very big ears (mirrors). This was changed fairly quickly in an update (first) in late '06.
The early one has a body line in the rear bumper level with the bottom of the number plate - this was moved to half-way up the number plate in the first update. This is also when the stereo's gained the ability to play MP3's.
The third iteration of the new Swift is when the bumpers changed again (and are no longer inter-changeable,slight differences in shape and mount points) - usually given away by the grilles in the front - the older models have three horizontal lines in the front lower grille, where the new one carries only two. I think this is when the floor pan changed as well - but check with dmwdave to be sure.
As can be seen - most of the differences are purely cosmetic. One other thing I would look for on an early one is there should be a label placed on the driver's side 'A' pillar showing a completion date for recall 'RS001' being completed - this was when Suzuki had to recall them because the impeller in the fuel pump was swelling, causing it to stop working.
I know for a fact that the stereo's are inter-changeable all the way up to the current models, as my '05 is running the stereo and IPOD adaptor out of an '08.

Cheers,

Jason

Are the rear lights interchangable?

When you look on ebay you usually see 05-07 or 05-08 on the lights.

My swift is '09 compliance (Sep 08 build). Would the rear lights advertised as 05-08 work, or has the shape changed?

I believe the shape is the same, just the wiring harness has changed, if memory serves.

Cheers,

J.

Bumping this, keen to add photo's of the different models.

If anyone can find photos of the differences (especially what jason73 has mentioned) and also photos of the special editions (eg. RE1,2,3).. I will start putting them together in the first post.

-edit-

Found a lot of info myself.. you will thank me when it all vanishes off the net ;)

Interesting how the 'limited' numbers crept up for each RE release.

Rim size is 15x5.5
The RE-1 had a badge on the tail gate and that was it... cant even get any more as you need to quote the vin number so you can have 1 badge to replace the one on the car if it is damaged and was told a photo may also be required if suzuki aus. ask for it...

I know a Swift Sedan that has RE-1 badges on it, don't think they were too hard to get...

Was at a Suzuki dealer today and found some more interesting changes.

The Sport has lost all it's red trim, it is now solid black including the seats (apparently same as the RE4 seats).
The Sport rims are also a gunmetal dark grey now rather than the original silver, anyone else noticed this?

Also the 'beat' green colour that was apparently limited to the beat is available in the standard model Swift.

Coincidently I was also at a Suzuki dealer this morning and also noticed the green in a standard Swift. Went there to check out the Kizashi. They had none at all!

Yeah I was there to take the Kizashi for a strap (and did)... don't think the beat was as popular as they were anticipating.

Keeping it on topic, the dealer mentioned that the cars turn up as a standard base model in the green and the dealers add the 'beat' pack. They had a silver car there with the beat additions.. so my guess is there will be a few variations on the beat theme getting around.

Just got a good look at the brochure published in May 2010, few minor changes.

The strangest is that the Kashmir blue is now only available on the base model with safety pack (ie. airbag upgrade). No longer available on the base, S or Sport.. very odd.

The 'Beat' green is called Electric Green now, and is available on the base model and the S not available for the Sport.

Not sure if it's new, but any colour other than White Pearl attracts a metallic paint charge (scam!)

The brochure also shows the base model without indicators in the mirrors (which were in the 100th Anniversery) but they are on the Sport now as a standard feature?? :?

None of it really makes any sense.
