I'm thinking about buying a new Swift in a couple of years time and I was hoping to get some feedback one way or another, especially from Swift owners.

First of all are Swifts reliable and durable? I own a Subaru Liberty MY04 1993 model and I can say that my Liberty is extremely reliable and durable. ( I've done 112,000km in it and am on my original brake pads and have not spent a penny on any repairs), I don't expect a Swift to be as reliable and durable as my Liberty but a Swift is cheap and uses less petrol than my Subaru.

My choice will be between a new Swift S and a Subaru Impreza R.........both cars are around the same price .....the Swift S I expect will be about $4,000 cheaper.

So what do you guys reckon?

Any comments will be appreciated.

No problems with mine yet but it is only 4 months old. A lot can change in couple of years time so I would be asking again closer to your intended purchase. I understand the 2011 is a bit different to the current ones with new engine options.

Thanks for your reply.....but I suppose I need to get feedback from Swift owners that have done over 100,000km......to try and gauge the Swifts reliability and durability.....anyhow it's good to know that your Swift has gone well for the first 4 months.

Production of the 2011 Swift is switching from Japan to Thailand to take advantage of Australia's free-trade agreement. This should keep the price rise to a minimum.

The 2011 is only marginally longer/wider than the current model (90/34mm).

Agree!!!

I have owned a subaru and now going back to Suzuki. My previous car was the 05 WRX and it was really nice to drive and reliable -coz it was new i guess lol, but servicing, parts and maintenance were expensive. We also had an 08 impreza R in our family which we have just traded for 2010 Honda acc Euro.

I have driven both the NA Imprez and the 2010 swift and i think this is what it boils down to:

If u are after a car that's gonna be nice to drive and don't mind paying the extra $$$ for fuel, servicing and the extra cost of the car, then get the Subaru. If u are after a car that's cheaper to run and willing to drive an inferior car (inferior when comparing 2010 2.5 na Imprezza vs new swift specs and general built quality) then go the swift.

The subie may fair better in 10 years time (who knows?) but personally i don't look that far when buying a new car.

At the end of the day you are not comparing apples, it's a different car with different price tag and, for me, if money is the main factor, IMO i would choose suzuki! simple.

I don't know what's going on with yr car, but my WRX went through 3 sets of pads and 2 sets of rotors, in the past 5 years(125,000 ks), and i and the previous owners are real sedated driver lol we really are no kidding. I also need to mention that it costed around $1000-1200 for 100'000 k service from the dealer about $100 cheaper non turbo Imprezza i guess , $650 for clutch (trade price - labour extra). It's these sorta prices u are up for owning a new Subie, and yes it better be realiable if this is how much owners are paying to keep it maintained.

I used to own a baleno which was still on original clutch at 120,000 ks and servicing and parts were much cheaper and it was equally as reliable even when it was 7 years old. so there u go !!!

I just wondering how good a Swift would be in 10 years time from new.

We had our first Liberty for 10 years....and it was still on it's original brake pads.....we didn't spend a penny on repairs. We've has our second Liberty for 7 years and it's even more reliable than our first Liberty. Both our Liberties averaged 33 MPG.....but I would like the fuel economy of a Swift better, and I like how Swifts feel so easy to drive around town.

If you want to make the swap for economy then that's your call, but you need to factor in the difference in size. The Swift's luggage area is practically non-existent, especially when compared to a Liberty.

If you're looking for something with better fuel economy than the Liberty without compromising on space or finish quality then I'd recommend looking at a Honda City. More powerful AND more fuel efficient than a Swift, with boot space comparable to a Commodore.

Thanks but...The Honda City is overpriced for what you get.......it looks horrible and it's underpowered.......I'll stick to an Impreza R .....or will wait and see what the all new 2011 Swift is like.

Good luck with your purchase, you seem well equipped to make the decision.

Oh BTW, here's some power/weight figures you might find interesting:
Impreza R = 81kw/t
City VTi = 80kw/t
Swift = 64kw/t
